HEPA filters can trap larger particulates but not all viruses or tiny aerosols. Trapping has no real sanitization effect and used filters need to be disposed of regularly and carefully, which can be costly in the long run.


UV requires long irradiation, often 10+ minutes or longer, making it impractical for air disinfection. Further limits of UV include diminished intensity over distance and the potential to cause other harmful effects.


Photo-Catalyst Oxidation (PCO) uses UV to activate a catalytic coating and generate a radical response. While it inactivates some pathogens, not all viruses are within range and its efficacy is easily degraded by dust.


Ionic technology works by electrically charging air molecules and particulates, causing them to adhere to specific surfaces. This may take pathogens out of the air but it does not destroy viruses or VOCs.


Ozone technology can kill airborne microbes but at the cost of human health with concentration levels needing to exceed >3,000 ppb (according to EPA guidelines, the threshold limit of ozone is -50 ppb).
It also has a low effect on reducing VOCs.


Electrostatic Precipitators rely on electrostatic charges for air particulates collection. The charges can facilitate airborne particles to adhere to surfaces, which takes them out of the air temporarily, but it does not destroy viruses nor VOCs.
